Glenn Kalick, DVM

UVC’s University Liaison

“Every time I engage with veterinary students and discuss topics of interest, three recurring themes emerge: Community, Mentorship, and Money. They want to know where they’ll live and work, who will guide them professionally, and how they’ll manage their finances. Externships play a crucial role in providing students with the practical experiences needed to address these questions. As the University Liaison for United Veterinary Care, my aim is to offer 3rd- and 4th-year externship opportunities that empower these talented individuals to find answers. Having experienced invaluable mentorship during my own Veterinary school journey and having provided guidance to associate veterinarians at my hospital, I now find myself in a position to mentor the next generation of veterinary leaders, completing a meaningful cycle of support and growth.”

Testimonials from

Veterinary Student Externs:

Julia Klinzmann

University of Georgia, College of Veterinary Medicine, Class of 2024

“During my UVC externships, I gained invaluable insights. From delving into the intricate mechanisms and pathophysiology of diseases during rounds to actively participating in procedures like thoracentesis and bronchoalveolar lavages, I absorbed a wealth of knowledge. Observing the way current interns could confidently explain each disease and the ‘why’ behind the animal’s clinical signs and treatment plans was one of the biggest reasons why I chose an internship. I am excited to pursue an internship with Ocean State Veterinary Specialists, as I believe it will enhance my ability to confidently make informed and knowledgeable decisions in a fast-paced environment.”

Marissa Marash

St. George’s University, School of Veterinary Medicine, Class of 2024

“UVC’s veterinary externship program was a hands-on immersion into the world of animal health, where I was able to hone my skills alongside dedicated professionals every day. From assisting in surgeries to conducting routine exams, every moment was an invaluable learning opportunity that solidified my commitment to compassionate veterinary practice. The mentorship I received not only deepened my understanding but also affirmed my dedication and solidified my confidence in providing compassionate, evidence-based care.”

Varun Verma

Michigan State University, College of Veterinary Medicine, Class of 2024

“By choosing Standiford Veterinary Center as one of my externships, I got to see all three services (GP, Urgent care and Emergency/ICU) offered at this location. I was able to work with multiple doctors and participate in procedures that are not offered at a general practice. Overall, this hospital helped with my medicine knowledge as well as my surgical skills.”

Rachel Corin

Lincoln Memorial University, College of Veterinary Medicine, Class of 2025

“I personally externed at Ocean State Veterinary Services last summer. I got to learn about exotics, emergency care, radiology/ultrasound, and special surgeries. OSVS was the busiest hospital I have ever been to, and there was so much to learn everywhere you turned. I wandered into the internal med suite while they were doing an endoscopy, and they let me press the button to grab the hair ties that the cat ate. I know it sounds silly, but that was so much fun. I was also able to do subcutaneous sutures for surgeries. I got to do physical exams on all exotics, too.”

Matthew Lender, JD, LLM (Taxation), MBA, CPA

FOUNDER

Matt Lender was literally born into the veterinary profession; both his sister and late father are/were renowned veterinarians. Growing up around a successful veterinary practice, Matt went on to become a lifelong student of business, finance, and the law.

Matt earned his BA from McDaniel College with a double major in Economics and Business Administration. He went on to earn both an MBA and JD from Quinnipiac University School of Business and Quinnipiac University School of Law, respectively. Matt also earned a Master of Law (LLM) in Taxation from the University of Alabama School of Law. He is a licensed CPA in Maryland and Connecticut.

Coming back full circle to his beginnings in animal health, Matt effectively leveraged his business and legal training and his expertise as a financial services executive to build upon his father’s legacy, Orange Veterinary Hospital. Together with Dr. Scott Crawford, they grew that one hospital to 16 practices in a very short amount of time. From there Matt, Scott and Dr. Michael Tuder became the founding members of United Veterinary Care.

Scott Crawford, DVM

BOARD VICE-CHAIR & FOUNDER

Dr. Crawford has over 20 years of experience in the animal health space and an impressive track record of supporting the veterinary profession and veterinary practices across the United States.

Dr. Crawford graduated with his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University in North Grafton, Massachusetts. A true entrepreneur, Scott became a veterinary practice owner less than a year after graduation.

Always the champion for independent veterinary hospitals, he co-founded Veterinary Purchasing Group (VPG). With VPG, he built an animal hospital client base of over 3,000 independent hospitals in less than five years with over $300 million of industry purchasing power, helping local veterinary hospitals compete better in a rapidly changing landscape.

More recently, Scott and his partner, Matt Lender, amassed a group of 16 veterinary hospitals, which they leveraged to form United Veterinary Care (UVC). Together, he and Matt, along with Dr. Michael Tuder, became the founding members of UVC.
